Goldfish

Carassius auratus
Goldfish are a wonderful and easy to keep fish. They get along well with most other fish and can live in a variety of water temperatures.

Although goldfish are often though of as a good beginner fish for children this is not the case. Goldfish will grow quite large (assuming they live) and will require about 10 gallons of water each to live happily.

Because they can grow to a foot or longer they will also produce more waste then smaller fish, most of it in the form of unseen ammonia and other toxic chemicals. Because of this goldfish are a bit more work then other common starter fish.
